Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American pilots who flew with distinction during WWII. The first class of these pilots began training in Tuskegee, Alabama, in July 1941. By the end of WWII, almost 1,000 African-Americans had won their wings at Tuskegee Army Air Field. About 450 of those were deployed overseas with the 99th and the 332nd Fighter Groups. 150 Tuskegee Airmen lost their lives in training or in combat.
