Otto W. Buenting Collection
Major Otto William Buenting was assigned to the 444th Bombardment Group, 58th Wing of the 20th Air Force in World War II. Major Buenting was the Operations Officer. During his combat service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Flying 40 missions while based in India and 35 missions when based in Tinian, Major Buenting was selected as one of the pilots for the B-29 crew of the "Lady Marge" that flew the Japanese Surrender documents to Washington DC. In the process, this crew set the worlds record from Honolulu to Washington on September 1, 1945 averaging 285 miles per hour.
